This new design is using marcasite.  The challenge for a modern design with this mineral is to protect it from external influences and yet keep all beauty inside.  The design applied here gives the ring an airy look, following the shape and movement of the finger it will be worn on. The wide golden leafs help to protect and reflect the inner beauty. The inner stone is a black or gray metallic-looking mineral and is very brittle. It is known since the time of the Ancient Greeks and was particularly popular in the eighteenth century, the Victorian era and with Art Nouveau jewellery designers, requiring very delicate setting techniques.  These techniques need to be mastered to be applied in contemporary jewellery.
