Many times I was on this part of the coast. Not only on nice sunny days, but -mostly- on cloudy, windy and rainy days. The air was, and still is, very fresh and full of oxygen. It is a great way to relax and blow the dusty and dark thoughts of a stressful life away. Just stroll along the beach and breath in - breath out. Focus on nothing in particular, focus on the infinite. And just keep on going. Recharge the batteries and be ready for another homerun in daily life.
It is this feeling that I wanted to capture. Capturing a feeling is, as we all know, not the easiest thing to do. But I consider it a main player in the creation of art. For me it is a part of my photography that can not be unlinked. The pictures should bear, in one way or another, the feeling of the moment, the feeling of the environment and the situation, the experience and way of sensing the elements of that particular place in that particular timeframe. Yes indeed, it is a very personal experience but even this can be matched with a bigger, more commonly recognised feeling. It can be projected on a general idea which is accessible to everyone. The access to this feeling is not always obvious. Sometimes -or should I say- mostly, the step towards the recognition of the general thought is the biggest one to take. Once on the level, the communication between the 'sender' and 'receiver' is more obvious and much more pure. But one has to go through the mist to see the light.
Back to the scene, back to the beach.
The situations were captured on 4x5" colour Polaroids. Why polaroids ? It is fast ! Not as fast as a digital camera shot, but it gives the possibility to check the results on the spot. A digicam would require postprocessing, which I didn't want at that moment. The way of developing the polaroid shot can be influenced, so this is where the feeling of the moment with the material of the polaroid film blends in. The lens of the camera was purposely put out of focus to illustrate the blur of the mind. The mist before ones eyes that slightly appears after a walk in this refreshing environment.
The whole picture gives an impression of the moment at that beach, in that weather. A state of the mind. My mind. Do you feel it ?
