Photo Thoughts
Art and Aesthetics.
Starting with Photography is a first step in enlarging your view upon the world around you. A dual goal is held before your eyes : the technical side and the 'art-side'. The first goal is quite obvious : without knowing what to do and what is possible, it is quite hard to give shape to your ideas. And sometimes, new ideas pop up after learning a new technique. They go hand in hand. But simultaneously one has to develop a view upon art and aesthetics. Then the hard question comes up : what is Art and can this be judged in an objective way. I can't give a one-and-only answer to the first question, but I am convinced that Art be judged disconnected of personal taste. A first necessity is building a wide range of experiences and views. The more you have seen, the better you will be able to place a new picture into a broad perspective. And furthermore : the more you have seen, the better you will be able to convert your ideas into a good photo. Of course, this general -or should I call it an universal- principle is correct for all Artwork. There we come to the definition that Art always incorporates a personal idea based upon experience and a (preferably wide) referential frame. And this can be the gate through which the monster of discussion and disbelief sneaks in. Often an Artist or his environment gets focussed on the idea. This is one step in the direction of a conceptual piece of Art. That can not be a problem on itself. The problem will be there when the idea is an idea for the idea and that the realisation is not evaluated properly. That is the point by which communication ends. The message that the Artist had in mind -his emotion, his thought, his feeling- shall not enter the receptors mind. The idea is made so important that all the rest of the Art is lost in noise. But then there is the opposite also ! Is a beautiful sunset Art ? A flower, a tree ? Or are they just romantic views and suited for sentimental souls ? Do these things have any link with Art and Ideas ? As with all Art, the border between subjective appreciation and a strong message is not always easy to define. That is what makes it all so interesting. It is all about growing, evolving, setting and breaking borders. There is a clear thing which should be remembered : Photographing is not just making pictures.
